Understanding Your Specific Concerns
While substance use and mental health disorders can occur in every population and impact individuals from various backgrounds, these issues disproportionately impact the LGBTQ+ community.
A 2020 survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that around 41% of sexual minority adults reported marijuana usage within the past 12 months compared to roughly 18% of the overall adult population.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found in 2022 also found that those in the LGBTQIA+ community were two to three times more likely to have used illicit drugs within the last year than those who do not identify as part of this population. Binge alcohol usage was also reported as more prevalent for those identifying as LGBTQ+.
We understand that the underlying causes of substance use disorder are unique to every individual. For those in the LGBTQIA+ community, this can include trauma related to:
Social stigma, abuse, or discrimination related to your gender identity or sexual orientation
Coming out or transitioning
Familial rejection
Internalized homophobia or negative feelings towards the LGBTQ+ community
Events that have occurred in your life prior to your substance use disorder
Existing mental health disorders
Feeling safe, cared for, and understood is an essential part of your recovery process. That’s why we work with you to provide both education and practical coping tools for managing and overcoming emotional discomfort and thoughts that may disrupt your road to recovery.
By integrating flexible treatment options that align with your personal values, ICS provides the necessary support you need for relapse prevention and long term recovery success.
Inclusive LGBT Counseling
Our team of clinicians come from diverse backgrounds and understand that navigating therapy as part of the LGBTQ+ community can be particularly challenging.
