ICS is focused on prevention and early intervention for high school students and their families.  By utilizing individual, family and group counseling, ICS aims to help families build protective factors and decrease risk factors.
 
Chemical Dependency Counseling
 
The Adolescent Outpatient Program at ICS aims to achieve abstinence through increasing protective factors and decreasing risk factors. Group sessions occur weekly and are balanced with intermittent individual or family sessions. All group educational material is taught by means of active, experiential learning methods, and follow group educational modules to enhance motivation and develop resistance skills, as described below:

Chemical Dependency Education: The purpose of this module is to define addiction and present a model for understanding the biological, psychological, and social aspects of the disease of addiction.

Motivation Enhancement: This module aims to enhance motivation for being sober by examining consequences of use as well as engaging in values clarification and goal setting exercises.

Functional Analysis: This module explores the connection between environmental cues, or triggers, and the thoughts and feelings that lead to our choices.

Refusal Skills: This module teaches effective behavioral strategies for refusing drug and alcohol offers.

Relapse Prevention: In this module adolescents will develop a plan to avoid high risk situations and engage in behaviors that anchor us to sobriety.

Additionally, the Adolescent and Family program will conduct group counseling with family members present. The benefit of integrating parents into treatment is not only to provide education to parents, but also to increase family bonding and feelings of connection between parents and their children. The family group modules include the following subjects:

Risk and Protective Factors: This module outlines the healthy building blocks that assist young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.

Adolescent development: This module outlines developmental hurdles that adolescents face and how drugs and alcohol can impede the process.

Boundaries, Limits, Authority and Discipline: This module examines healthy, effective parenting strategies and is a primary feature of the parental component in the Adolescent and Family program.

Family Systems: This module examines rigid, overextended, and permissive family systems as well as healthy family functioning.

Communication: This module teaches how interpersonal conflict can be settled effectively.

Relapse Signs: This module educates parents about cues that would indicate their children are at risk of relapse.
