Young Adult Chemical Dependency Program

The Young Adult Outpatient Program at ICS utilizes the following group educational modules:

Chemical Dependency Education: The purpose of this module is to define addiction and present a model for understanding the biological, psychological, and social aspects of the disease of addiction. Additionally, education will discuss the process of synaptic transmission, mechanisms of drug action in the brain, and the pharmacological effects of drugs on the body.

Motivation Enhancement: This module aims to enhance motivation for being sober by examining consequences of use as well as engaging in values clarification and goal setting exercises.

Cognitive Behavioral Skills: This module explores defense mechanisms, cognitive distortions, and teaches how to dispute irrational patterns of thinking. Other effective behavior skills, such as thought-stopping techniques, will be taught as well.

Relapse Prevention: This model will examine relapse process, including relapse justifications and the relapse drift. Specific skills, such as refusal skills, will be covered and clients will develop a personalized plan to avoid high risk situations and engage in behaviors that anchor us to sobriety.

Wellness: This model will discuss strategies to build positive emotion without drugs and alcohol, including a focus on exercise, nutrition, and spirituality.
